Our Flagship Sustainability Initiatives

As a responsible corporate citizen, BAT Bangladesh is committed to playing a pivotal role in aiming to help society achieve a sustainable balance between environmental protection and social progress.

We are proud of our flagship sustainability initiatives, each of which has established its own legacy since inception.

Afforestation: Largest private-sector driven afforestation program in the country

Afforestation: Largest private-sector driven afforestation program in the country

Since the 1980s, BAT Bangladesh’s afforestation initiative has been a cornerstone of biodiversity conservation, distributing over 130 million fruit, timber, and medicinal plant saplings free of cost to farmers and stakeholders across 24 districts—contributing to both environmental and socioeconomic development. The program addresses critical community needs such as environmental restoration, income generation, and energy supply. By blending fast-growing fuelwood, native, and medicinal species in a 70:30 ratio, it aims to deliver both ecological and economic benefits. Engaging over 35,000 farmers, the initiative encourages tree planting among farmers, entrepreneurs, and community members. To support this mission, 19 nurseries have been established. Most income earners in the supported areas are farmers, while others operate small businesses or work as agricultural and non-agricultural day laborers - fostering economic resilience and inclusive growth. This afforestation initiative has earned multiple accolades in recognition of its impact, including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award on five occasions and the Chief Advisor’s Award. Looking ahead, the program aims to further expand its reach and deepen its contribution to sustainable development.

Safe drinking water: Ensuring healthier lives with safe drinking water

Safe drinking water: Ensuring healthier lives with safe drinking water

Celebrating its 16th year in 2025, BAT Bangladesh’s safe drinking water initiative is a flagship program that provides safe and accessible water to communities affected by arsenic contamination and saltwater intrusion. Operating through 126 water filtration plants across 25 districts, the initiative is committed to protecting public health—particularly in farming and salinity-prone areas where safe water is scarce or hazardous.

Millions in Bangladesh face serious health risks due to arsenic and salinity in drinking water. This challenge is further intensified by climate change, with rising sea levels and frequent droughts increasing saltwater intrusion into freshwater sources. From Kushtia to Manikganj, Rangamati to Satkhira, BAT Bangladesh’s safe drinking water initiative offers sustainable, long-term solutions to this critical crisis.

By improving access to clean water, the initiative plays a vital role in enhancing community health and resilience. Its impact has been recognized with prestigious accolades, including the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Award and the Bangladesh Innovation Award.
