Background

Dr. Ziaul Abedin is a seasoned civil servant with over 26 years of experience in the Bangladesh Administrative Service (BAS). He holds a Ph.D. in Economics under the prestigious Monbukagakusho (MEXT) scholarship from Japan, a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of Dhaka, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Aligarh Muslim University, India. Throughout his career, Mr. Abedin has served in various strategic roles across Field Administration, Foreign Affairs, and Financial Management contributing significantly to national policy formulation and reform initiatives.

Date of appointment to BATB Board

Mr. Abedin was appointed as a Non-Executive Director to the Board of Directors of BAT Bangladesh on 30th October 2025.

Achievements

Mr. Abedin began his career in field administration, gaining practical insights into the implementation of central development policies. He later served as Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as a Diplomat at the Embassy of Bangladesh in Tokyo. His tenure at the Finance Division of the Ministry of Finance has been marked by leadership in macroeconomic policy formulation, debt management, and public financial reform. He played a key role in developing the Medium-Term Debt Management Strategy (MTDS) and co-authored several diagnostic reports on government financial systems, including debt sustainability and contingent liabilities.

From January 2021 to August 2022, Mr. Abedin served at the Economic Relations Division (ERD), where he strengthened Bangladesh’s economic ties with development partners in Asia and Oceania. Currently, he is serving as Additional Secretary at the Finance Division, leading the Macroeconomics Wing and advising on strategic economic decisions to support sustainable growth.
